Some of the varieties of Avataras
Purusha Avataras: Lord Vishnu as the Paramatma of the entire material world (Maha Vishnu), as the Paramatma of each universe (Garbhodaksayi Vishnu), and as the Paramatma of every living being (Ksirodakshayi Vishnu).
Lila Avataras: Lila means play or pastimes. Examples include the Lord appearing as a boar (Varaha), half man half lion (Nrisimha), Lord Rama, and Krishna Himself.
Guna Avataras: Responsible for the three Gunas and the cycles of creation (Brahma), maintenance (Vishnu) and destruction (Shiva) of the universe.
Yuga Avataras: They appear to share the particular dharma for each yuga or age. The current age of Kali Yuga the Yuga Avataras is Sri Chaitanya and the dharma is Kirtan!
Shakyavesa Avataras: They're not Vishnu, but they have been empowered with Vishnu's Shakti (energy) to carry out special tasks. Srila Vyasadeva, the compiler of the Vedic literature is an example.
